🌍 Healthcare Jobs with Visa Sponsorship – Global Opportunities

Healthcare is one of the strongest categories for visa sponsorship worldwide. Countries across North America, Europe, the Gulf, Asia and Oceania are facing severe and persistent healthcare workforce shortages, and most have placed nursing and medical occupations on official shortage lists with dedicated, accelerated sponsorship pathways.

The key advantage of healthcare: unlike many other occupations, healthcare roles have dedicated visa categories in several countries — the UK has the Health and Care Visa, New Zealand has Registered Nurse on Green List Tier 1 (Straight to Residence from offshore), Australia has multiple nursing specialisations on the CSOL, and Germany offers the EU Blue Card at the reduced shortage occupation threshold. This means faster, more predictable sponsorship routes than general skilled migration.

Global healthcare sponsorship snapshot: New Zealand offers Straight to Residence for Registered Nurses on Green List Tier 1 — apply from offshore. UK Health and Care Visa has a salary threshold of only £25,000 for occupations on national pay scales. Australia requires AHPRA registration and ANMAC skills assessment (A$595). Canada has dedicated LMIA pathways for nurses (NOC 31301) and healthcare assistants. Germany EU Blue Card shortage threshold is €45,934.20 (2026). The Gulf is the most accessible for all levels with tax-free salaries and comprehensive benefits.

🌎 Region-by-Region Healthcare Sponsorship Guide

🇬🇧 United Kingdom – Health and Care Visa

The UK Health and Care Visa is a sub-type of the Skilled Worker visa, specifically designed for healthcare professionals. It has the lowest salary threshold of any UK work visa and exempts applicants from the Immigration Health Surcharge.

  • Eligible occupations: Registered nurses (SOC 2231), midwifery nurses (SOC 2232), medical practitioners (SOC 2211), physiotherapists (SOC 2221), occupational therapists (SOC 2222), speech and language therapists, psychologists, and adult social care professionals.
  • Salary threshold: £25,000 for occupations on national pay scales (healthcare roles). The general threshold is £31,300. For occupations on the Immigration Salary List (ISL), the threshold is £25,000 or the occupation-specific threshold, whichever is higher. NHS Band 3 entry point is £25,760, exceeding the minimum. The Health and Care Visa salary requirement remains at £25,000.
  • English requirement: B2 level English proficiency (increased from B1 on 8 January 2026).
  • Employer requirement: Only CQC-registered providers in England can sponsor Health and Care Visa applicants. Must provide a valid Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS).
  • Important change: Care workers (SOC 6135) and senior care workers (SOC 6136) can no longer make new applications. A transition period is in place until 22 July 2028 for existing workers.
  • Pathway to PR: After 5 years on the Health and Care Visa, you can apply for Indefinite Leave to Remain.
  • Salary: Registered Nurse £29,970–£36,483 (NHS Band 5). Midwife £36,483–£44,962 (NHS Band 6). Physiotherapist £29,970–£36,483 (NHS Band 5).

🇦🇺 Australia – 482, 186 and 494 Visas (AHPRA + ANMAC)

Australia has multiple nursing and medical occupations on the Core Skills Occupation List (CSOL), making it one of the strongest countries for healthcare sponsorship. The process requires AHPRA registration and ANMAC skills assessment.

  • Eligible occupations: Registered Nurse (Aged Care) (ANZSCO 254412), Registered Nurse (Medical) (254418), Registered Nurse (Critical Care and Emergency) (254415), Registered Nurse (Community Health) (254414), Registered Nurse (Mental Health) (254422), Registered Nurse (Perioperative) (254423), Registered Nurse (Paediatrics) (254425), Enrolled Nurse (411411), Midwife (254111), Physiotherapist (252511), Occupational Therapist (252411), Medical Laboratory Scientist (234611).

Recency of practice: at least 450 hours of clinical practice in the last 5 years. English: IELTS 7.0 (with 6.5 in writing) or PTE 63 (with 76 speaking, 60 writing) as of 23 April 2026.

  • Priority processing: Canada prioritises healthcare occupations for faster work permit processing. The exact NOC code tied to the job offer determines eligibility.
  • Provincial registration: Nurses must register with the provincial nursing regulator (e.g. CNO in Ontario, BCCNP in BC, CARNA in Alberta).
  • Salary: Registered Nurse CAD $70,000–$110,000. Healthcare Assistant CAD $40,000–$60,000. Doctor CAD $178,213–$327,151 (as advertised in Edmonton, Alberta).
  • English requirement: CLB 4–5 for most work permits; higher for PR pathways. IELTS or CELPIP required for provincial registration.
  • Pathway to PR: An LMIA-backed job offer adds CRS points under Express Entry. Several Provincial Nominee Programs also nominate healthcare professionals.
  • Realistic outlook: Excellent. Canada actively uses LMIA to fill healthcare shortages, particularly for nurses and healthcare assistants, with clear pathways to permanent residency.

🇳🇿 New Zealand – Green List Tier 1 (Straight to Residence)

New Zealand offers the fastest and most direct permanent residency pathway in the world for healthcare professionals. Registered Nurses, Midwives, Doctors, Physiotherapists, Occupational Therapists and Medical Laboratory Scientists are all on Green List Tier 1, which allows eligible professionals to apply for Straight to Residence from offshore — before they even arrive.

  • Green List Tier 1 (Straight to Residence): Registered Nurse (all specialisations), Midwife, General Practitioner, Specialist Medical Practitioner, Physiotherapist, Occupational Therapist, Medical Laboratory Scientist, Clinical Psychologist. You can apply for residence from offshore if you hold a full-time job offer from an accredited NZ employer, paid at or above the median wage (NZD $35.00/hour). This means permanent residency on arrival.
  • Green List Tier 2 (Work to Residence): Enrolled Nurse, Anaesthetic Technician, Medical Imaging Technologist. After 24 months of full-time employment in New Zealand, you can apply for residence.
  • Nursing Council of New Zealand registration: Mandatory for nurses and midwives. Registration must be obtained before you can practise.
  • Salary: Registered Nurse NZD $80,849–$89,128 per annum (as advertised for Whangārei Lab roles). Midwife NZD $85,000–$110,000. Doctor NZD $150,000–$250,000+.
  • English requirement: IELTS 7.0 in each band (or equivalent) for Nursing Council registration. Passport holders from the UK, USA, Canada, Ireland and Australia may be exempt.
  • Realistic outlook: The best pathway in the world for healthcare professionals seeking permanent residency. Straight to Residence for registered nurses is a genuine game-changer.

🇩🇪 Germany and EU – EU Blue Card and §16d

Germany offers two main pathways for healthcare professionals: the EU Blue Card for university graduates and the §16d visa for vocational qualifications. Nurses and doctors qualify for the reduced shortage occupation threshold.

  • EU Blue Card (Germany 2026): Shortage occupation threshold for nurses, doctors, midwives and other academic health professionals: €45,934.20 gross per year (€3,827.25/month). The standard threshold for non-shortage occupations is €48,300. Requires a recognised university degree.
  • §16d visa: For vocational qualifications (≥ 2 years). German A2 language level required for entry, with recognition finalised on arrival. This is the primary route for nurses with vocational (non-university) qualifications.
  • Qualification recognition: Nurses and doctors must have their qualifications recognised in Germany. Doctors need Approbation (full licence to practise). Nurses need Anerkennung (recognition of vocational qualification). The recognition process can take 3–6 months.
  • Other EU countries: Ireland offers the General Employment Permit for nurses. Netherlands, Belgium, Denmark and Sweden also offer EU Blue Cards and national work permits for healthcare professionals.
  • Salary: Germany €32,000–€48,000 for nurses; €65,000–€120,000 for doctors. Ireland €35,000–€50,000 for nurses.
  • Language requirement: German B2 required for nursing practice (for patient communication and medical documentation). A2 required for entry under §16d.
  • Pathway to PR: EU Blue Card offers a fast track to permanent residency — 21 months with B1 German or 33 months with A1 German. §16d leads to PR after 3–4 years.
  • Realistic outlook: Excellent for nurses and doctors. Germany has a shortage of ~46,000 nurses and a projected deficit of hundreds of thousands by 2049. The EU Blue Card shortage threshold makes it financially accessible.

🇦🇪 UAE and Gulf – Employment Visa

The Gulf is the most accessible region for all levels of healthcare sponsorship. Employers in the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain and Oman routinely sponsor overseas healthcare professionals with tax-free salaries, free accommodation, medical insurance and visa sponsorship.

  • Eligible roles: Registered Nurse, Assistant Nurse, Pharmacist, Lab Technician, Doctors, Allied Health professionals.
  • UAE Employment Visa: Employer-sponsored. Standard for all full-time healthcare roles. Benefits typically include tax-free salary, visa sponsorship, medical insurance and 30 days paid annual leave.
  • Licensing requirements: Nurses must obtain a licence from the relevant health authority — DHA (Dubai), DOH (Abu Dhabi), or MOHAP (Northern Emirates). This involves Dataflow verification, an exam, and an eligibility/classification decision. The licence is tied to the facility, so changing employer means moving both the licence and the visa.
  • Salary: Registered Nurse AED 9,000–15,000 per month (as advertised in Ajman). Nurse Managers AED 15,000–25,000 per month. All tax-free with accommodation and medical insurance included.
  • English requirement: No formal test. English is the working language. Arabic is an advantage.
  • Realistic outlook: Excellent. The Gulf is the best region for healthcare sponsorship worldwide, with tax-free salaries and comprehensive benefit packages. Roles are available at all levels, and Indian-qualified nurses are actively recruited.

🇸🇬 Singapore – Employment Pass and S Pass

Singapore offers two main pathways for healthcare sponsorship: the Employment Pass for senior healthcare professionals and the S Pass for mid-skilled healthcare roles.

  • Employment Pass (Doctors, Senior Nurses, Allied Health): Minimum qualifying salary SGD 5,600/month (rising to SGD 6,000 from January 2027). Requires recognised qualifications and at least 40 points on COMPASS.

  • Pathway to PR: EP and S Pass holders can apply for Permanent Residence after sufficient time in Singapore.
  • Realistic outlook: Good for senior healthcare professionals. Singapore actively recruits foreign healthcare talent, particularly for specialist and management roles.

🇺🇸 USA – H-1B and EB-3 Visas

The USA offers two main pathways for healthcare sponsorship: the H-1B for specialty occupations and the EB-3 for skilled workers. Nurses are not eligible for H-1B — the EB-3 is the primary route.

  • H-1B: For doctors, physicians, and certain allied health professionals. Requires a specialty occupation and a bachelor's degree or higher. Subject to the annual cap lottery.
  • EB-3: For registered nurses and other healthcare workers. Requires a permanent job offer and a labour certification (PERM). Long waiting times for some nationalities.
  • NCLEX-RN: Mandatory for registered nurses. Must pass the NCLEX-RN exam and obtain state licensure.
  • Salary: Registered Nurse USD $65,000–$110,000. Doctor USD $150,000–$300,000+. Physician USD $180,000–$400,000+.
  • English requirement: IELTS 6.5 or TOEFL required for licensure and visa.
  • Pathway to PR: EB-3 leads to permanent residency. H-1B can lead to EB-2 or EB-3 green card sponsorship.
  • Realistic outlook: Good for doctors and specialist nurses, but the EB-3 waiting times can be long (5–10+ years for some nationalities). The H-1B lottery is competitive.

⚠️ Common Healthcare Job Scams – How to Spot Fake Sponsorship

  • "Guaranteed visa" promises: only government authorities can grant visas. No agent can guarantee approval.
  • "Guaranteed AHPRA registration" or "guaranteed ANMAC" ads: registration and skills assessment are assessed by the official bodies, not by agents. No agent can guarantee a positive outcome.
  • Upfront payment requests: no legitimate employer asks for visa processing fees before hiring.
  • WhatsApp recruiters asking for passport scans before a formal offer: verify the employer on the official sponsor register first.
  • Job offers without a sponsorship reference number: genuine sponsors provide a CoS, LMIA, nomination or Job Check reference.
  • Salaries far below market rate: a "registered nurse" role advertised at $500/month is a red flag.
  • Fake "fast-track" registration schemes: AHPRA, ANMAC, NMC and other regulators do not have paid "fast-track" partners. Be wary of agents charging thousands for "guaranteed registration".
  • Fake job boards: stick to verified platforms like IFMOSA and official government job banks.
IFMOSA's commitment: we only publish jobs that appear to come from licensed or verifiable employers. Each listing includes official government links where available. Always cross-check using the relevant sponsor register.
